Dorothy Jean Markus, 86, of Egan, SD, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2023 at Riverview Healthcare Center in Flandreau, SD. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, November 27, 2023 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Flandreau, SD. Visitation will be held from 3:00PM to 5:00PM on Sunday, November 26, at Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau, SD.

Dorothy was born on April 6, 1937 in Brookings, SD to Arnold and Herta (Nissen) Olson. She grew up on a farm outside of Brookings and received her education in country school and later graduated from Brookings High School.

In July of 1956 she was united in marriage to Chan Markus; to this union the couple was blessed with three children, Pam, Greg, and Patti.  The family lived in Egan, SD.

Dorothy had many hobbies; however, she really enjoyed baking and making candy everyone. Every Christmas she was called on by many to place an order for her baked goods and candy. She was also an avid gardener; she had a large garden and would can goods every year. She and Chan were also dog breeders of White Shepherds and sold them all over the country.

She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Flandreau, SD, and the American Legion Women's Auxiliary in Egan, SD.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Pam Gillespie and her husband, George, Hartford, SD, and Greg Markus of Egan, SD; siblings, Roger Olson, ID, Barbara Diedrich, Weslaco, TX, Justine Christianson, St. Louis, MO, Omar Olson, Brookings, SD, Darell Olson and his wife, Rita, Brookings, SD; grandchildren, Jacob Markus and his wife, Ashley, Brookings, SD, Loree Markus, Egan, SD, Jeana Davis and her husband, Griffin, Belmont, NC, David Gillespie, and Michael Gillespie of Hartford, SD; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arnold and Herta Olson, husband, Chan Markus, daughter, Patti Packard, and brothers, Richard and Dean Olson.
