Doris S. Solem, Flandreau, SD passed away peacefully in her home at the age of 96 November 5, 2022. Doris was born February 9, 1926, to Byron and Mary (Warrell) Rahn in Flandreau. She received her education in the Flandreau public schools graduating High School in 1943. She then attended Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls. Doris met Stanley while they were roller skating in Flandreau. They were married on July 1, 1944, in Flandreau. After they were married, they moved to Memphis, TN while Stanley attended school for the Navy. She returned to Flandreau when he was ordered to Adak, AK. When Doris's husband returned from his duties, they began their family. She was a good Mom to her five children enjoying their antics. After Marilee entered kindergarten, she became a working mother. Doris's career with the Flandreau Public Schools began in 1962 when she was employed as a baker. Some years later she became the Elementary lunch program supervisor. She was advanced to the Middle and High school supervisor when she received her Food Service Certification through continued education. She completed her 30 plus year career in the early 1990's. A long-time member of the United Methodist Church she served in many capacities and was involved in: UMW, the care committee, funeral care and service, Oktoberfest, and bazaars. She assisted with the Sunday school program when her children were younger. She was a Brownie and Cub scout leader. She liked participating in the community any way she could, always enjoying the activities surrounding the various parades, concerts, and other social events. She was also a member of the Fireman Auxiliary and VFW for whom she served as Treasurer for many years. She enjoyed her membership in the Order of the Eastern Star and participated in activities at the Senior Citizen Center especially the meals and game nights.
A lifelong resident of Flandreau Doris is survived by five children: Kathleen (Solem) West, Osceola WI; Steven, Vale, SD; Phillip (Cathy), Sacramento, CA; Byron, Flandreau; Marilee (Solem) Parsley, Flandreau; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She also has many other relatives and friends that mourn her loss. Doris was preceded in death by her husband Stanley, grandson Tel Parsley, son-in-law James F. West, brother Kenneth Rahn and sister-in-law Elizabeth (Fadgen) Rahn.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am Thursday, November 10, 2022, at the United Methodist Church, Flandreau, with burial in Union Cemetery, Flandreau. Visitation begins at 9:30 am preceding the service at the church.
