Doris Johnson, 89, formerly of Flandreau, died Sunday, November 4, 2012 at Good Samaritan Luther Manor, Sioux Falls. Doris was born April 7, 1923 at Flandreau, SD to Edward and Alice (Gunderson) Ovrid. She attended Juve Country School and graduated from Egan High School in 1941. Doris taught school in Moody County and then worked at the Los Angeles Port of Embarkation in California during WWII. Doris joined in marriage to Joel L. Johnson on December 22, 1946 at Flandreau. Together they farmed southeast of Flandreau and were blessed with three wonderful boys. Doris taught Sunday school at Lone Rock Church and Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Flandreau for many years. They moved into Flandreau on September 3, 1982 and then moved to Sioux Falls on April 5, 1998 due to Joel's health and to be near their children. Joel preceded her in death on May 20, 2003.
Doris is survived by Douglas, Glenn and Lynette (Ron's wife), all of Sioux Falls, 3 grandchildren, Jodi (Michael) Clark, Toni (Derrick) Schafer and Jesse (Jennifer) Johnson, 8 great-grandchildren, Drake, Teegan, Braxton, Ashlen, Ayleah, Treyton, Tyler and Dylan, a sister Evelyn Armijo, Huntington Beach, CA, Evelyn's girls, Julie (Gino) Sasso and Dana Richter and her son Ryan, all of California, sisters-in-law, Bernice and Hilda, cousins, Boyd, Reva and Donna, with many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, her oldest son, Senior Correctional Officer Ronald "RJ" Johnson, E.O.W. 4-12-11, and her parents. Special thank you to Evelyn and Bernice for all of their help and support they have given to our Family.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am Saturday, November 10, 2012 at Messiah Lutheran Church with burial in Lone Rock Cemetery. Visitation begins Saturday at 9:30 am at the church.
