Donald G. Hammer, 82, of Trent, SD passed away Monday, January 3, 2022 at the VA Medical Center, Sioux Falls, SD. Donald was born March 22, 1939 in Elkton, SD; the first of four children to Edgar and Emily (Kopecky) Hammer. After Emily passed away, Edgar remarried, and four more siblings were added to the family. Don grew up in Hartford, SD and he gained another family, Ray and Pearl Bird. After high school, he entered the US Navy until his discharge when he went to work for John Morrell. He was married on May 12, 1961 at Sioux Falls to Sandra Brasel. They had seven children and made their home in Sioux Falls until moving to Trent in 1982. After working for John Morrell, Don began working for Preform Solutions until his retirement. Don's favorite pastime was driving around to different towns and places in his car, making new friends along the way.

Grateful for sharing his life are his children: Jamie Hammer, Harrisburg, SD; Beth (Dan) Hartman and Amy Hammer, both of Brookings, SD; Virgil Hammer, Trent, SD; and Laura (Travis) Anderson, Dell Rapids, SD; 10 grandchildren: Christopher, Jessica, Nikita, Andrew, Adam, Jacob, Jordan, Josh, Sean and Logan; 7 great-grandchildren: Mileena, Cortana, Draven, Riddick, Draiyson, Hadley, and Huxton; brothers: Derald, Edgar, Jr., Daniel, Doug, Gaylen, Tommy, Alex, and Steve; sisters: Frances, Audrey, and Anna; and a host of other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandy; son, Robert; daughter, Donna; his parents, and sister, Cathy.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, January 7, 2022 at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery, Sioux Falls. Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Thursday, January 6, 2022, at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau.
