Obituary

Donald A. Bennett, 75, passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Golden Living Center in Madison SD. Donald was born July 6, 1939 to Frances and Myrtle (Babcock) Bennett in Sioux City IA. Donald married Verna Heyer on October 7, 1961 at the Colman Methodist Church. They lived in Sioux City, IA until 1963. Donald was drafted into the Army on April 9, 1962 and was honorably discharged on March 4, 1964. They then moved to Colman where Don worked at the Skelly Station on Highway 34. In 1971 he started working for the City of Colman as the Chief of Police and was also head of the City Maintenance Department. He continued with the Maintenance Department until his retirement in 2002. Donald had a very deep commitment to the City of Colman and all of the residents of the town. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, canoeing, camping as a big family event, gardening/flowers and attending any events that either his children or his grandchildren were involved in. He had a great love for the outdoors and would do "anything" for his grandkids to include "sleepovers!"

Donald is survived by his children, Delora, Brookings, Matthew (Nancy), Colman, Neal (Tami), Sioux Falls and Melissa (Don) Darcy, Norfolk, VA, 8 grandchildren, Lance (Stacy), Alexis, Michael, Joseph, Tayler, Jenna, Tara, Breena, 3 great-grandchildren, Tynan, Kiera, Bayne, 3 brothers, Robert, Les, Bill and a sister Patricia. Donald was preceded in death by his loving wife Verna (August 22, 2005), parents, mother and father-in-law, Ben & Nelda Heyer, and siblings, Neil, George, Mary Jane, and Dorothy.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Monday, March 2, 2015 at Colman Lutheran Church with burial at Hillside Cemetery, Egan. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 - 5:00 pm with a 5:00 pm prayer service at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Colman.
