David "Smitty" was born on April 21, 1955, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Donald and Marlene (Allen) Smith. During his childhood, he attended numerous schools throughout the area. He finished his schooling in Egan, SD.
Shortly after high school, David enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served as an electrician. Following his time in the Navy, he held several jobs before beginning a long and dedicated career with Loiseau Construction, where he worked for more than 40 years.
On May 17, 1974, David was united in marriage to the love of his life, Carol (Chamley), in Egan, South Dakota. Together, they raised two children and built a life centered around family, hard work, and caring for others. Though David spent much of his life working, he treasured the time he spent with his children, especially hunting and fishing together.
David was a devoted husband, father, papa, uncle, brother, and friend. His grandchildren were truly the pride and joy of his life, and he never missed an opportunity to attend their events and support them in all they did.
He found happiness in playing cards, fishing, restoring cars, gardening, canning, building, and spending time with family and friends. David was known as a jack of all trades and a perfectionist in everything he did. He was never one to sit still, and whenever he started a project, he gave it his all. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to friends, neighbors, or anyone in need.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Carol; son, Josh (Cheryl), and their children, Avery, Kaden “Bud,” and McKinley “Kinners”; daughter, Tonia; brother, Mike (Susan) Smith; sister, Terri (Dennis) Fjellanger; brother, Tom (LouAnne) Smith; sister, Donna Smith; sister, Nicki (Cindy) Smith-Underwood; numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law; many nieces and nephews; and countless dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Marlene Smith; and his sister, Pat Tollefson.
