David Perry, 69, of Flandreau, South Dakota, passed away on October 8, 2026, at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at First Presbyterian Church in Flandreau, South Dakota. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
David Perry was born on August 30, 1957, in Port Lavaca, Texas, to Marcus Perry and June Elizabeth Ree. He grew up in Houston, Texas, alongside his ten siblings and attended Dick Dowling Junior High School. Early in life, David developed a strong work ethic, helping on oil rigs before joining the United States Marine Corps in 1977. During his military service, he served as a .50-caliber machine gunner and earned his GED. He proudly served his country until 1981.
In 1988, David moved to Flandreau, South Dakota, after accepting a position at the Flandreau Indian School, where he worked until 1989. He then worked for the Moody County Sheriff's Office from 1989 to 1990. When Royal River Casino opened in 1990, David became one of its first employees. He went on to spend nearly 20 years at the casino, serving as the director of surveillance.
On July 22, 1991, David married Gina Burshiem at First Presbyterian Church in Flandreau. Together, they raised three children: Cory, Duran, and Loreena. David was a proud member of the Yankton Sioux Tribe.
David was known for his strong work ethic and his sense of humor. In his free time, he enjoyed crafting, painting, and watching conspiracy theory videos on YouTube. He was a hardworking man throughout his life who will be remembered for his humor and the love he had for his family.
David is survived by his wife, Gina Burshiem; his children, Cory (Sami) Burshiem Sr., Duran (Julia Fluteplayer) Perry, and Loreena (David KillsAHundred) Perry; his grandchildren, Gavin Jones, Marlene, Cory Jr., Curtis, Crenshaw, Corvin, Mija, Mardella, Cain, Creed, Cordell, and Mirra Burshiem, Bliss Fluteplayer, Aurelia Fluteplayer, Benji Fluteplayer, Layla Perry, and Willow Drapeau; his siblings, Robert Perry, Gale Perry, Mark Perry, Tracy Perry, and Katherine Tolth; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marcus Perry and June Elizabeth Ree; his grandparents, Sampson and Catherine Ree, and Antonio and Minnie May Gonzalez; and his siblings, Marcus Calvin Perry, Kenneth Perry, Marcus Perry Jr., Elizabeth Perry, and Kimberly Decoteau.
