David was born to David and Justina Hofer on September 17th 1946 in Ethan SD. He spent his childhood in Bigstone, Minnesota with his 13 siblings. Oh, the stories we've heard of his adventures growing up! After moving to LeMars IA, he married Mathilda Gross November 1966, and they had two children, Debbie and Diane. They lived in Iowa, California, and South Dakota before settling back in Iowa. He was a hard-working man his entire life, and he instilled that work ethic in his children and grandchildren. He worked various jobs throughout his life, including 25 years at Metz Bakery, where he was lucky enough to retire at the young age of 55!
After retirement, he loved spending time with his family, and worked part-time at Wal-Mart. Initially, he didn't like the hours he was scheduled, so he made his own, and it took the supervisor a month before she realized what was happening. He loved spending time on his friend's farm in Nebraska, where he could work in the fields, take care of the cows and his beloved horse Princess, whom he once brought into the house for a laugh. He loved spending time outdoors hunting, fishing, and riding his four-wheeler.
David was a simple man and spending time with his family was a treasure to him, whether it was 5 minutes or 5 hours! He loved kids and was overjoyed when he became a father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was always there when we needed him and never hesitated to offer a hand, a dollar, or a kind word or hug no matter who it was. He was always present for family events and his [great]grandkids sport activities and was so proud of them.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Debbie Hofer [Chuck Lucas} of Cherokee IA, Diane [Enzo] Montano of LeMars IA, grandchildren Christopher [Caitlin]Hofer of Cherokee IA and their son Carter, Justin [Elizabeth] Hofer of Omaha NE and their children Giovany, Andreas, and Eloise, Kayla Hofer [Diego Garcia] of LeMars IA and their son Gabriel, and Jacob [Brianna] Hofer of Cherokee IA and their children Bellamy, Nicole, Paisley; Sisters Dorothy, Sarah, Alma, Marian, Hannah, Susan, Katie, Lydia, Elizabeth and brother Chris, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Welcoming his arrival in heaven are his parents, brothers Levi and Paul, and Sister Clara, and many other amazing people that touched his life.
