Obituary

Darlene E. Bauer, 93, of Brooking, SD passed away peacefully surrounded by her three children on Thursday, September 22, 2022, at the United Living Community Center, Brookings. Darlene Ella Leinen was born on the farm in Troy Township, MN to Myron and Lena (Hinsch) Leinen on August 5, 1929. She attended country school through eighth grade. Darlene then attended and graduated from Pipestone High School in May of 1947. Growing up, she enjoyed playing Hawaiian guitar and later crocheted many doilies and afghans. Darlene and William Berkenpas were joined in marriage May 25, 1950, and to this union three children were born: Jim, Steven and Lori. Darlene worked in various jobs as a telephone operator, housewife, nurse aid, and housekeeper at SDSU Brookings. In March 1981, Darlene was united in marriage to Clarence Bauer. They resided in Brookings for 34 years. They were founding members of the United Church of Christ. Clarence and Darlene enjoyed traveling to various parts of the country visiting relatives and siblings.

Darlene is survived by her three children, James, (Linda); Steven (Faye); Lori (Jerry); three stepchildren, Karen (Rod) Sorensen; Connie (Ray) Langland; Rick (Gay) Bauer; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Carol Meyer and Joyce Reyburn.  Darlene was preceded in death by her husband Clarence and her parents. A life well lived.

Funeral services will be 1:30 pm Saturday, September 24, 2022, at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Elkton, with burial at Diamond Lake Cemetery, Lake Benton, MN. Visitation begins at 12:30 pm Saturday.
