Damian Bearshield

Damian Bearshield passed away on Friday, March 6, 2026. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 9, 2026 at 10:00 AM at the Oyate Oyanke Center in Nebraska. A wake service will be held at the same location on Sunday, March 8, 2026 starting at 7:00 PM.

Damian J. Bearshield – Wahacaka Mato, an Isanti Dakotah Exile was born in Sioux City, IA on June 26, 1967, to Carol Wabashaw and Daniel Bearshield Sr. He was the first born of a close-knit family. He welcomed eight siblings: Daniel Bearshield, Lisa Bearshield, Amanda Bearshield, Leon Bearshield, Camilla Nunez, Natalie Nunez, Carla Nunez, and Pedro Nunez.

He attended high school at the Flandreau Indian School where he made an impactful legacy in chess. He loved to share his State Championship win over an attorney. He loved to pat himself on the back for being a pool player, gambler and other skills. Damian is a man who mastered several trades; he received his certificate in welding, and a PROUD ACCOMPLISHMENT he earned was his associate’s degree in HVAC Tech from Minnesota West.

In 1993, he met the love of his life, Lisa Hoffman his beautiful companion of 33 years. They welcomed their son DeVon Bearshield (Capa Cikala) in May of 1994. They shared two other children Russell Torrez and Falon Torrez. They were blessed with seven grandchildren: Kaydins, Eva, Reya, Malikai, Stanley, Sylis, and Monnai. He was also blessed with several nieces and nephews. He loved to spoil and have the best of times with them all.

His most favorable past time was eating delicious food with relatives, mainly steak. Whether it was grilling, stove cooked or out to eat we all have cherished memories of those times together. Entertainment, carnivals and his favorite FIREWORK shopping, were a few exciting times he loved to share with all the kids and family.

Damian dedicated his life to the Canupa and walked strong and humbly in his prayers. He loved to sing ceremony and sundance songs. He supported and Sundance’d with many relatives to pray in a good way. He was a Sundance Helper at Roy Stone Sr.’s Hocoka for many years. He also supported Henry Quick Bear Sr.’s Hocoka, we continue to walk strong together in prayer with Mato Ohanko Hocoka. Our tiwahe and tiospaye are very blessed to implement spiritually in our everyday lives.

He will be remembered sincerely for his generosity, love, hard work, compassion, and spirituality. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the memories he created. His presence and humor will be dearly missed and not forgotten.
