Obituary

Charles F. Gageby, age 81, passed away Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at his home. Charles Ferdinand Gageby was born October 6, 1934 at Ward, SD to Earl and Helen Glaser Gageby. He grew up in Ward and graduated with the Flandreau High School class of 1952. From 1953-1954 he played professional baseball in the New York Yankees farm system. He then joined the U.S. Air Force and served from February 8, 1955 to February 8, 1959. He was married to Martha Swingle on May 9, 1957 in Wichita Falls, Texas and they moved to Ward, SD in 1959. Chuck was employed with the U.S. Postal Service as a rural letter carrier for 36 years retiring December 29, 1995. He was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Elkton. Chuck enjoyed many things, but hunting, fishing and baseball were among his favorites.


Chuck is survived by two sons, Mark (Celeste), Pierre and Wyman (Lorie), Flandreau; one daughter, Kathy Lunday, Flandreau; eight grandchildren, Rylin, Raylene, Charles, ReAnne, Anna, Shanaya, Randi and Mara; four great-grandchildren, R.J., Sparrow, Lynk and Adara; four sisters, Barbara Severson of Inwood, IA, Mary Ellen Janklow of Rapid City, Shirley (Jake) Creedon of South Easton, MA and Joan Evans of Edina, MN. He was preceded in death by his wife Martha, his parents Earl and Helen, his step-mother Gladys Gageby, and two brothers-in-law, Les and Art.


Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 15, 2016 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Elkton. Visitation will be Sunday, February 14 from 2-4 p.m. with a 4 p.m. Prayer Service, all at the church in Elkton.
