IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles "Chuck"
C. Tufty
April 2, 1941 – March 14, 2016
Charles Clifford Tufty passed away Monday, March 14, 2016 at the Sanford Hospice Cottage, after a short battle with cancer. He was born on April 2, 1941 in Sioux Falls, SD to Leonard and Hannah (Hanson) Tufty. He attended Longfellow School and graduated from Sioux Falls Washington in 1959. He then attended the University of South Dakota and then graduated from Sioux Falls College in 1968. On August 10, 1963 he was united in marriage to Karen Quinn in Sioux Falls. They had three children, Geoffrey, Jennifer and Sarah. Chuck, like his family, worked a majority of his life in the automobile business, initially at Hutton-Tufty Dodge and then Duke Tufty Dodge. Just after college, he worked at Blue Shield and worked with Medicare during its infancy and then for Rushmore Mutual Life in Rapid City during the late 1980's. In 1973, he realized his dream and purchased his own Ford dealership, Hayes Ford, in South Sioux City, NE and finished his car business career at Flandreau Ford Chrysler in 2008. He was actively involved in each community in which he and Karen lived. Chuck was on the city council in Flandreau, the board of the Crystal Theatre, the park and rec board and was a member of Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church. He participated in the Relay for Life and was master of ceremonies in numerous events around the area. Chuck loved to hunt and fish and to participate in sporting activities. When he was younger he was an accomplished golfer and the USD ping pong champion during his college years. Most of all, he loved being outdoors and being with his wife and family. His faith and family were the most important things in his life. Whenever advice was needed, he was the first one the family turned to. His experience and common sense approach to matters were cherished by his family.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Karen, of 53 years, his children, Geoffrey (Michele) of Sioux Falls, Jennifer (Bill) LuMaye of Raleigh, NC, and Sarah Tufty of Kansas City, KS, five grandchildren, Claire and Bennett Tufty of Sioux Falls, Elizabeth, Nichole, and Ben LuMaye of Raleigh, NC, and a sister, Tess (Jim) Corning, of Pierre, SD. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 18, 2016 at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church with burial at Prairie Queen Cemetery in Nunda, SD. Visitation will be 5 – 7 pm Thursday at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau, with a 7 pm rosary and scripture service.
