Chan Markus, 80, passed away Monday, February 3, 2014 at his home. Chan was born in Michigan, ND on February 24, 1933 to Paul and Elsie (Bazel) Markus. Chan and his family moved to Watertown where he attended school. After school he enlisted in the Air Force serving during the Korean War. Following his discharge from the Air Force he worked on a ranch in Washington. He then moved to Brookings, SD and worked for the National Food Store, where he met Dorothy Olson. Chan and Dorothy married on July 25, 1956, in Brookings, SD. The family moved ten times before settling in Egan, SD in 1968. Chan cut meat at Paul's Shurfine and Sam's Club for the last years of his life. He enjoyed riding horses, raising horses and dogs, going to auction sales while looking for the best bargains, and he loved tractors.
Chan is survived by his wife Dorothy; 3 children, Pam (George) Gillespie, Hartford, SD, Greg Markus, Egan and Patti (David) Packard, Box Elder, SD; 5 grandchildren, Jacob, Loree, Jeana, David, Michael; 4 great grandchildren, Jaeley, Harper, Andrew, Cora Jean; Cousin, Dorothy Sidle and numerous other cousins and family. Chan was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be Friday, February 7, 2014 at 10:30 am at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church, with burial at Hillside Cemetery, Egan, SD. Visitation is from 5:00 – 7:00 pm Thursday with a 7:00 pm scripture service at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau.
