Carol Jean (Hoss) Olson, 56, passed away Tuesday, November 3, 2015 in Pierre, SD. Carol was born March 17, 1959 to Leon and Betty (Berg) Hoss in Flandreau, SD. She attended school in Flandreau, graduated in 1977 and went on to Black Hills State University in Spearfish where she obtained a degree in Elementary Education. Carol married the love of her life, Jay Olson (Flandreau) in December 1983 in Brainerd MN. They resided in Brainerd for four years before moving to Pierre SD where they began their employment in state government. Carol worked in research and publishing for the South Dakota State Historical Society at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre.

Carol loved music, art, history and photography. Their son, Sam, born in 1991, quickly became the center of their lives and Carol, Sam and Jay built many happy memories together. After an extended illness, Jay passed away in 2007. She joyfully welcomed Sam's wife, Kelli Livermont, into her family in 2013, which grew with the addition of 2 beautiful grandchildren.

A loving mother, grandmother, daughter and sister, Carol is survived by her son Sam (Kelli) Olson and grandchildren Teagan and Jaylee, Pierre SD; her mother Betty Kringen, Flandreau, SD; brothers Jim Hoss (children Lee, John and Jennifer) Stevensville, Michigan; Jerry (Cindy) Hoss (daughter Elizabeth) Brookings, SD; David Kringen, Mitchell, SD; sisters Joan (Bob) Handberg (children Dan, Scott and Erin) of Flandreau, SD; Cathy Hoss (Bryan Bortnem) of Rutland, SD; and Diane (Jamie) Field (children Kelsey, Anna) of Lakeville, MN; numerous great nieces and nephews and many devoted wonderful friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Jay Olson; her father Leon Hoss; a sister-in-law Pamela Hoss; and her stepfather Eugene Kringen.

Memorial services will be at 1:00 PM Friday, November 20, 2015 at Lutheran Memorial Church, Pierre, SD. Visitation is from 5-7 PM at Feigum Funeral Home, Pierre, SD with a 7:00 PM prayer service on Thursday, November 19, 2015.
