Brian "BJ" Burshiem, 37, passed away Sunday, October 2, 2016 in an automobile accident in rural Niobrara, NE. Brian was born September 20, 1979 in Madison, SD to Derek and Gayle (Sampson) Burshiem. He attended school in Flandreau and graduated from Flandreau Public High School in 1998. BJ attended Dakota Wesleyan, Haskell Indian Nations University and SDSU in Brookings, SD. He worked at the Flandreau Indian School for six years coaching and in recreation. BJ married Jacki Stroup on July 7, 2007 in Flandreau. BJ lived and worked at the Sundance Golf Club in Buckeye, AZ where he met his fiancée Courtney. BJ and Courtney moved to Niobrara, NE and he was general manager at the Tatanka Golf Club until his death. He loved golf, basketball and his dogs Molli, Jade, Dacotah and Nala. BJ is survived by his fiancée Courtney, his parents Derek and Gayle, Flandreau; brother KC (Kendra), niece Keva, nephew Kaden, brother Cory (Sami) and seven children, all of Flandreau; grandparents Wayne and Alice Sampson, Highmore, SD; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family. BJ was preceded in death by his dog Sierra and paternal grandparents, Sophie Marlene LaBatte Crawford and Videl Gene Burshiem.

Visitation begins at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at the Santee Community Center, Santee, NE with an all night wake service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, October 6, 2016 at the Wicoicaga Otipi Community Center, Flandreau, SD with an all night wake service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 7, 2016 at the Wicoicaga Otipi Community Center, Flandreau.
