Obituary

Boyd E. Scofield, age 67 died Friday October 17, 2014 in Gilbert, AZ after a 4 year battle with cancer. He was born in Flandreau, Moody Co., South Dakota to Wilbur and Elvera (Lee) Scofield. He attended Fletcher school in Union Twp., Moody Co. and graduated from Flandreau High School in 1964. After attending Mankato Business College in Mankato, MN., Boyd worked as assistant manager at Kmart in Sioux Falls. He lived in various cities while working for Western and Delta Airlines including Pierre, SD, Prescott, AZ., Pasco, WA., and Covington, KY. Following his retirement from the airlines he lived at Post Falls, ID and then Apache Junction, AZ. for the last nine years.

In his early years he embraced his love for baseball by playing and coaching for various baseball teams in the Sioux Falls, Pipestone and Flandreau area. He was an avid Dodgers fan through their good and bad years. The many years of working for the airlines allowed him to share his gift of gab and storytelling talents with many people. Boyd's outgoing and friendly personality were enjoyed by many, including some celebrities along the way. He was happy to introduce some of his family and friends to people such as Baseball Hall of Famers Tommy Lasorda and Roy Campanella. Mohammad Ali also enjoyed visiting with Boyd at the airport during his travels.

Boyd was always very active. His interests included hunting, fishing and bowling. In his retirement years he predominantly played golf. Most recently he and his 3 golf buddies won the last two Worlds Oldest Scramble Team tournaments in November 2013 and February 2014. Boyd also enjoyed football (Chicago Bears), raising race horses and traveling.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his children; daughter Nikki (Scofield) Casey and grandchildren, Gabriella and Thomas Casey of PA, son Brooks (Le Ann Kiley) Scofield and grandson Brodyn Scofield of AZ, and daughter Kelli Scofield of AZ; sisters Barb Alberts, Bonnie (Bill) Willard, Joan (Gene) Hammer, Janice (Bob Wilson) Fox and brothers Wayne and Warren Scofield.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 PM, Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Flandreau United Methodist Church. A gathering of family and friends will be from 5:00 - 7:00 pm on Friday, November 7, 2014 at Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau, SD.

The family would like to give special appreciation to Barb Alberts, and all of his siblings for their care and dedication to Boyd during his final weeks.
