Audrey Marie Johnson, 92, passed away Monday, July 29, 2013 at Avera McKennan Hospital. Audrey was born May 10, 1921 at Garretson, SD to Clayton and Bertha (Rothenbuehler) Rudd. At the age of four, she moved with her parents to a farm east of Egan, SD. She attended the Egan Consolidated School graduating in 1939. She graduated from Eastern State Normal (Dakota State University) with a teaching degree. Audrey taught in rural schools in the Colman, Flandreau and Trent areas and completed her teaching career in the Baltic school system in 1947. Audrey married Charles A. Johnson on December 29, 1946 in Flandreau following his discharge from the Marine Corp during WWII. They established their home on a farm northeast of Flandreau, later moving to a farm southeast of Flandreau. From 1973 to 1986 she was employed at the Flandreau Medical Clinic as a receptionist/bookkeeper. Charles preceded her in death on August 21, 1991. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church where she was active all of her life serving on boards and offices. She was also a member of WELCA, the Board of Deacons, a Luther League volunteer, Sunday School teacher and children's choir director. Audrey was a member of Beulah Chapter Order of the Eastern Star from 1953 to 1995, the Square Deal Club since 1947 and a member of Chapter X PEO since 2003. She served as a 4-H club leader, was a member of PTA and the Moody County Historical Society. Audrey was a loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed dancing, reading, writing and poetry.
Audrey is survived by two sons, Rudd (Barbara), Medford, OR, Jeff (Ranea), Lake Benton, MN, one daughter Jarolyn "Jari" Flandreau, four grandchildren, Virginia Hogan Johnson, Rudd Carrington Johnson, Jennifer (Josh) Veurink, Bobbie Jo Johnson, one sister Veryl Rudd, Flandreau, three nieces, one nephew, several cousins, and many friends including very special friends, Lisa Doyen and Roger Kramer, Flandreau. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles and her parents.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Friday, August 2, 2013 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, with burial in Union Cemetery. Visitation is from 5:00 – 7:00 pm Thursday with a 7:00 pm prayer service at Skroch Funeral Chapel.
