Arthur C. Leitzke, 70, died Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls. He was born August 26, 1942 at Geddes, SD to Ernest and Myrtle (Lundin) Leitzke. In 1945 they moved to Brookings, SD and he graduated from Brookings High School in 1960. Art served in the Brookings National Guard Unit and worked for Johnson Brothers Construction building I-29. Art was married to Marla Jensen on June 26, 1966 at Midway Lutheran Church. He attended Lake Area Vocational to be an aircraft mechanic and then worked for Northwest Airlines in Minneapolis. He was then an aircraft mechanic and pilot for SDSU in Brookings from 1969-1991. Then he became grounds supervisor at SDSU until retiring in 2007. Art was a member of Midway Lutheran Church and was on the Colman School Board from 1980-1986. He was a Denver Broncos and SDSU fan, enjoyed Harley Davidson motorcycles, riding motorcycles, Sunday afternoon car rides, doing farm work for Todd Intermill and his biggest passion was his dog Harley.
Art is survived by his wife Marla; two daughters, Tamara and Stacy Leitzke, both of Seattle, WA; four siblings, Lorraine Stroup, Portland, OR, Loren (Sophie) Leitzke, Ipswich, SD, Lee (Mary) Leitzke, Caldwell, ID, Marlene Edens, Menominee, WI; many nieces and nephews including Becky (Chuck) Fischer, Chanhassen, MN, Pam (Gregg) Thompson, Osakis, MN and Dan (Kay) Ziegler, Volga, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother Monroe and two brothers-in-law, Gordon Stroup and Tom Edens.
Funeral services will be Monday, September 17, 2012, 10:30 am at Midway Lutheran Church, rural Flandreau, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 2:00-4:00 pm Sunday at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Colman. Casual attire preferred.
