Arlene M. Burkard, 88, died Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Arlene was born May 6, 1921 at Colman, SD to Martin and Bertha (Stageberg) Hilmoe. Arlene graduated from Colman High School in 1938 and she worked at Barnes Grocery Store and then at Dakota State Bank. Arlene married Alfred Burkard on February 15, 1947 at Dell Rapids. They farmed east of Colman and then moved to a farm four miles west of Colman in 1953. They moved into Colman in 1983 and her husband preceded her in death on October 3, 2007. Arlene was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Altar Society, Catholic Daughters and the American Legion Auxiliary. Arlene enjoyed playing cards, crocheting "scrubies", canning, gardening and word searches. Arlene and Alf were original members of the Colman Area Golf Association where she was an avid golfer and a member until 2009.

Arlene is survived by a daughter, Lisa (Dan) Huff, Colman; two grandchildren, Ashley and Evan; 4 step-grandchildren, Konae, Dan Jr., Nichole and Amy and a sister-in-law, Floris, Madison, SD. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers, Orlo, Don and Norris and three sisters, Mildred, Vera, and Blanche.

Mass of Christian Burial is Saturday at 10:00 AM at St. Peter Catholic Church, Colman with burial in the Colman Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4:00 PM at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Colman with a 4:00 PM Catholic Daughters Rosary and a 6 PM scripture service.
