Colman

Alyce Louise Kontz, 68, of Colman, South Dakota, passed away on April 16, 2026, at Brookings Health System in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at SS. Simon and Jude Catholic Church in Flandreau, South Dakota. Visitation will take place from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau, South Dakota, with a prayer service and rosary beginning at 7:00 P.M.

Alyce was born on November 16, 1957, in Rapid City, South Dakota, to Frederick Eckert and Lois (Taylor) Eckert. She grew up in Hill City and graduated from Hill City High School. During her childhood, Alyce enjoyed exploring the Black Hills right outside her back door.
Following high school, Alyce attended South Dakota State University. During that time, she met the love of her life, Peter Kontz. The couple was united in marriage on April 4, 1981, in Brookings, South Dakota, at Saint Thomas More. They made their home on a farm south of Brookings, where they raised their three children. Alyce was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker. She was a woman of strong faith, a big heart, and an even bigger love for her family.

Alyce found joy in many hobbies, including gardening, quilting, baking, cooking, sewing, and playing the piano. Her gardens were a source of pride and beauty, enjoyed by all who passed by or visited. She had a gift for creating, and she generously shared the fruits of her talents—whether through homemade meals, baked goods, quilts, or sewn items—with friends, neighbors, and charities close to her heart. Giving to others brought her great happiness and was a true reflection of her caring spirit.

She was active in several groups, including Christian Women’s Club, and was especially devoted to her church, Saint Simon and Jude Catholic Church. There, she played the organ, taught Sunday school, directed the bell choir, led the Altar Society, and helped wherever she was needed. Her faith and commitment to serving others were central to her life.

Alyce had a wonderful sense of humor, a quick wit, and always knew how to make people laugh. Her smile brought warmth and energy to every room she was in. She had a knack for making people feel valued, comfortable, and truly welcome.

Alyce is survived by her loving husband, Peter Kontz of Colman; her children, Stephanie (Chet) Kontz-Myers of Colman, Jacinda Kontz of Sioux Falls, and Brian Kontz of Colman; and her grandchildren, Madelyn, William, and Amelia. She is also survived by her brothers, Gerry (Barbara) Eckert and Roger (Kathy) Eckert, both of Rapid City, and her sister-in-law, Pat Eckert, of Conroe, TX.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Robert.
