Alvin J. Thin Elk, 61, of Flandreau, SD, passed away Saturday, August 6, 2016 at Avera Flandreau Hospital. Alvin Thin Elk was born July 7, 1955 at Rosebud, SD to Aloysious and Vivian (Standing Elk) Thin Elk. He received his education at White River Public School. Alvin worked at the Alcohol and Drug Center where he was an advocate. He moved to Flandreau, SD in the early 1980's. Alvin was a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, enjoyed listening to music, doing drawings, and reading Native American books and the Native Sun News. He loved being with his family and his beloved companion, Otis, his dog.


Alvin is survived by his son Brian Thin Elk, Flandreau; two sisters, Helen (Nate) Nickey and LaVonne Duechar, both of Flandreau; two brothers, Calvin Thin Elk, Lake Andes, SD; Gene Thin Elk, Vermillion, SD. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Lorenzo and Everette Thin Elk and one sister Elvira Tubby.


Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at Eastman Hall, Flandreau, with burial in First Presbyterian Cemetery. Visitation begins 4:00 p.m. Tuesday at Eastman Hall with a 7:00 p.m. traditional ceremony.
