Charles Donald “Spot” Babcock, 84, passed away December 29, 2012 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD. Don “Spot” was born October 1, 1928 in Flandreau, SD to Everette and Emma (Bennett) Babcock. He attended Liberty Country School in Moody County until the sixth grade. He then attended Flandreau Public School graduating in 1946. He worked for several farmers from 1946-1951. Don then enlisted in the US Marine Corps August 8, 1951 and was stationed at Kaneohe Marine Base in Oahu, HI until August 8, 1953. He started raising cattle and was a grain farmer, both passions he dearly loved, from 1954 until his retirement in 1993. Don married Judith Bachman-Petersen on September 9, 1989 in Flandreau, SD. They made their home in Flandreau and Brookings before retiring back in Flandreau in 2010. In 1981 Spot received the Moody County Livestock Feeder of the Year award and in 1998 he received the SD Corn Growers Association Yield Contest in District 4 in the non-irrigated division yielding 192.5890 per acre. He was a member of the Flandreau United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Flandreau Masonic Lodge #11 AF & AM.

Grateful for having shared his life is his wife Judith, 3 step-daughters, Jody Wallin, Sugar Land, TX, Mindy Petersen and Sally (Mike) Johnson, both of Flandreau, 6 step-grandchildren, Aspen, Gavin, Joshua, Matthew, Heather (Eric), Megan, 1 step-great-grandchild Aurora, 1 brother Ross (Paula) Babcock, Menifee, CA, 3 nieces, Roberta “Rob” (Larry) Johnson, Whitewood, SD, Janet Babcock, Sioux Falls, Laurie (Kerry) Thomas, Flandreau, 1 nephew James (Rita) Babcock, Kenai, AK, 4 great-nephews, Scott (Tiffany) Lewis, Jesse Babcock, Bob DiMercurio, Brook (Lacey) Rentschler, 5 great-nieces, Jennifer (Eric) Lewis-Valdez, Roxanne Lewis-Bush, Lilly and Rosie Babcock, Elizabeth (Jeromy) Van Beek and 2 very special buds, Chad and Derek Bothern. Don was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Robert “Buck” and infant William Everette and an infant nephew Charles Dean Babcock.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Friday, January 4, 2013 at the United Methodist Church with burial in Union Cemetery. Visitation is from 4:00 – 7:00 pm Thursday at Skroch Funeral Chapel with a 7:00 pm prayer service followed by a Masonic service.
