Robert (Bob) Peter Gill, age 82, of Flandreau, died Thursday, December 13, 2012 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD following a short, couregeous battle with cancer. Robert was born November 10, 1930 in Egan, SD to George and Caroline (Pierce) Gill. He graduated from Egan High School in 1949. He attended SDSU and Moeller Barber College in Minneapolis. In 1954, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served until 1956 when he was honorably discharged. Bob married Rosemary Bauer on June 18, 1957. They lived a short time in Sioux Falls where he worked as a barber. In 1958, they moved to Flandreau and purchased McFarland's Barber Shop. Bob's favorite thing about being a barber was "the people". He retired from the barber shop in 2000. In 1977, Bob began working as the Veteran's Service Officer for Moody County and served in that position until retirement in December 2010. He also served as the Moody County Emergency Management coordinator for a number of years. Bob was very passionate about his work and enjoyed helping people. He also loved gardening, feeding the squirrels and taking care of his beautiful yard.
Bob is survived by his wife Rosemary of 55 years, two sons, Steven (Ann) of Rochester, NY and Jim (Linda) Gill of San Antonio, TX, 4 granddaughters, Chelsea, Natalie, Kristen and Lindsay, 2 great-granddaughters, Madisyn and Jalyssa and a sister Jane Beaner, Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Richard and Raymond and a sister Joyce.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, December 17, 2012 at 10:30 am at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church, Flandreau, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation from 2:00-5:00 pm Sunday at Skroch Funeral Chapel with a 5:00 pm prayer service.
