Marlys J. Thorson, 81, passed away Monday, December 3, 2012 at the Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota. She was born April 7, 1931 in Flandreau, SD to Carl J. and Hazel I. (Henderson) Hanson. She graduated from Flandreau High School in 1949 where she was Homecoming Queen. Marlys attended Madison Normal and received a teaching degree. Marlys married Vernon Thorson on August 11, 1950 in Flandreau. They moved to Colorado Springs and Alaska while Vern was serving in the army. They returned to Flandreau in 1952 and Marlys taught at Juve Country School. In 1959 they moved to Omaha and then lived in Des Moines from 1972-1975 where she received an associate degree in social work. They moved to Grand Island in 1975 where Marlys was a social worker at a nursing home. They moved to Loveland, CO until returning to Flandreau in 1989. Marlys was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, WELCA, P.E.O., Athena Club, played bridge with several groups and she loved sewing and making floral arrangements.
Marlys is survived by her husband Vernon, daughter Theresa Leigh (Bill) Sawyer, Omaha, NE, sons, Gary (Lisa), Denver, CO, Eric (Dawn), Los Angeles, seven grandchildren, Crystal, Maren, Courtney, Lindsay, Antia, Hannah and Jake, two great-grandchildren, Brody and Sophie Mae and brother James (Marsha) Haugen, Loveland, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Hazel Hanson, stepfather Julius Haugen and her sister Vergene Pottebaum.
Funeral services will be Friday, December 7, 2012 at 11:00 am at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Flandreau, with burial in Union Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Skroch Funeral Chapel with a 7:00 pm prayer service.
